About Derrick
Derrick Evans is an American politician, educator, and football coach. He served as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates for the 19th district from December 1, 2020, to January 9, 2021.
Derrick participated in the 2021 United States Capitol attack, an action for which he was criminally charged. He was arrested on January 8, 2021 and resigned from the House of Delegates the next day.
The 37-year-old politician and real estate investor is the oldest of 5 children. He was born and raised in southern WV where he currently resides in the small unincorporated town of Prichard, WV.
Derrick attended West Liberty University where he was a member of both the football and track team. Derrick was a consensus NCAA 1st Team All American Defensive Back, who also earned All Conference Honors in track.
After graduating college Derrick moved back to his hometown area and married his college sweetheart Melissa Evans (Pierzchala). They currently have four children, Marlee (6), Emma (5), Waylen (2), and Lincoln (1).
Upon graduating, Derrick accepted a job with the Wayne County Board of Education where he taught and coached high school football. Derrick bought his first investment property in 2017, where he eventually quit teaching to pursue real estate full time. Derrick currently works full time managing his real estate cooperation.
Derrick became known across the state as a conservative and pro life activist. He built up around 50k followers on Facebook, and was known as the conservative voice in West Virginia. Multiple babies were saved through his pro life efforts outside of the states only abortion clinic. Derrick not only saved lives, he also facilitated adoptions between mothers who chose adoption over abortion and families who were looking to adopt. Derrick was able to obtain lawyers for the legal portion of these adoptions who ended up working pro bono allowing these families to save thousands of dollars. Because of his of large following, Derrick was also able to help raise money for a local pro life pregnancy center which allowed for the purchase their own ultrasound machine.
Derrick was first elected into office in November 2020, where he was the first Republican to win his state house district in 98 years. Derrick immediately got to work by signing and requesting a special session to end the Governor of West Virginia’s executive power to lock the state down and to force COVID vaccines. Derrick also signed an amicus brief with other state legislators from across the country demanding illegal votes for Joe Biden to be thrown out.
Derrick attended the Jan 6th rally in Washington DC. Derrick live streamed the event to millions of viewers through his FB page, and although he was peaceful and respectful (on the East side of the building), Derrick quickly found himself as one of the faces of Jan 6th. Derrick was one of the first people arrested, and spent the last 18 months fighting legal battles to protect his freedom.
On June 22nd, Derrick was sentenced to 3 months in federal prison and 3 years of probation for a felony charge of civil disorder. Derrick is set to report to prison in late July.
